In Seaside’s early days, many of the owners building homes stayed in Airstream trailers—“land yachts”—awaiting completion. Some of the town architects did as well, as they spent long, long nights working out the details of this beautiful place.
The trailers were as much a part of the landscape and style of Seaside as any of the other elements. They were comfortable and wonderfully designed and represented the adventurous spirit of the people who were making Seaside what it is today.
If you drive through the heart of town these days—down the 30-A with its sandy shoulders—you’ll find a line of Airstream trailers side by side by side. Those land yachts are now great little independent food vendors selling ice cream and hot dogs and healthy, organic fare to anyone who walks up with an appetite.
