Inspired by the breezy open-air markets of Europe, this began in 1981 as a humble produce stand by the sea. It was the brainchild of Seaside co-founder Daryl Davis, and when she saw the festive atmosphere that quickly grew around her Saturday market, she sought vendors from around the Panhandle to come and sell their wares here. Joined later by a partner, Mary Patton, she personally traveled to wholesale markets throughout the country to hand-select unique merchandise, with a focus on the easy style that comes naturally to Daryl and to Seaside itself. They called their now-celebrated, year-round bazaar Perspicacity. It means “keenness of insight,” an apt description of Daryl’s discerning tastes.
Just steps from the beach, open cabanas sit side by side in the courtyard, each one different from the next. In one you might find a happy colorful vase just right for your breakfast nook. In another, a new batik sarong, a floppy hat or enchanting handmade earrings that will always remind you of this summer. Or you can just soak in the scene along with the sun. Think of it as window shopping, without the windows.
